With well over 14 million procedures every year, a root canal is a very common dental procedures that is performed by dentists. This simple procedure has helped save millions of natural teeth by preventing dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is an assortment of blood vessels that assist in creating the surrounding tooth. Due to trauma to a tooth, an infection of the pulp can be caused. Cracks, chips, deep decay, or repeated dental procedures can also cause a pulp infection. Symptoms of the infection can be classified as a visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the gums and tooth.

How is a root canal performed?
Should you experience the symptoms associated with root canal, your dentist will more likely recommend non-surgical treatment to discard the infected pulp. The root canal system is thoroughly sealed and cleaned while removing the infected pulp. If your tooth is not agreeable to endodontic treatment or the success is unfavorable, you will be notified at the time of consultation or when a complication occurs during or after treatment. We use local anesthesia to take away discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia if needed. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and comfortably returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?
When your root canal therapy has been done, your restorative will receive a record of your procedure/treatment. Remember to contact their office for a follow-up restoration after a few weeks of the procesure. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is needed to protect your tooth. It is not common for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does happens, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further/future infections, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will it cost?
The cost with this procedure can depend on factors such as the harsh of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. Endodontic treatment is often much less expensive than the procedure to remove the tooth and replace it with an artificial one.
