Periodontal diseases happens when there is an infection in the gums. Without treating it, it can lead destroying existing teeth.

Why is oral hygiene so important?
Adults mainly over 35 lose more teeth to periodontal disease than from cavities. Three out of four adults are affected at some time in their life. Dental plaque is one of the leading causes of gum disease, so it is recommended that a daily brushing and flossing routine. This will prevent most future periodontal conditions.

Periodontal diseases can happen due to many different factors. Nonetheless, it's mainly caused by bacteria found in dental plaque, that constantly forms on your teeth. Without preforming daily dental routine then the plaque will harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tar)

Other important factors affecting the health of your gums include:
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition

Periodontal Disease
Plaque is a colorless film, which sticks to your teeth at the gum line. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. Bacteria found in plaque produces toxins or poisons that aggravates the gums, which can cause them to turn red, swell and bleed easily. If this irritation is continued, the gums separate from the teeth, which causes spaces to form. As periodontal diseases continues to form, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place will deteriorate.

Preventing Gum Disease
The best way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss daily as well as getting dental checkups and cleanings. Unfortunately, even with the most frequent home dental care, people still can develop some form of periodontal disease. To prevent further damage from the disease, getting a professional check up is highly recommended.
