Cleaning and check ups

Preventative Dental Care
It is recommended that you get a general cleaning every six months. Seeing your dentist twice a year may seem like a hassle, however those two short visits can potentially prevent a future life time of dental problems.

Quick At Home Cleaning Tips from the American Dental Association:
  • Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft bristle brush with a small strip of fluoride toothpaste. Try replacing your toothbrush every three to four months
  • Use dental floss to eliminate hard to reach areas that foods get stuck in like between the teeth or under the gum line. Decay can be caused due to the toothbrush not being able to reach the bacteria. Therefore, it is very important to floss between your teeth daily.
  • Flush your mouth with an antiseptic mouth rinse (Listerine or Crest Pro Health) before brushing, twice a day for about 30 seconds.
  • Consume a healthy diet each day. Try limiting or eliminating sugary foods.

Preventive dental care is important throughout your life, no matter your age.
For having the best routine at home and at your dental office will give you a longer, healthier bright smile for years to come. Here are some tips to prevent cavities and plaque build up.
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day using a soft bristle brush with a small strip of fluoride toothpaste will help take away left over plaque and bacteria. Don't forget to brush the top of your tongue to not only freshen your breath but also eliminate extra plaque caused by trapped foods.
  • Flossing your teeth after brushing at least twice a day can help get rid of food particles stuck in between hard to reach places. Using floss and mouthwash will freshen your breath and keep plaque away.
  • Eliminating and limiting sugary foods can cause cavities and plaque build up. Eating nutritious foods like vegetables, fruits, etc. are highly recommended. • Scheduling regular checkups with your dentist about every six months for regular teeth cleaning.
  • Ask your dentist for advice on how to keep a good dental hygiene. For example, you can place dental sealants (protective plastic coating) towards the back teeth (on chewing surfaces). This is commonly where tooth decay starts.
  • If you are active in sports, make sure to ask your dentist about specially molded mouth guards to make sure there are no tooth accidents.

It's time to schedule your next appointment with your dental office if it’s been six months since your last visit!

Initial Oral Examination
Regular checkups and x-rays are the basics for the best possible oral health. We suggest that patients should visit our office for teeth cleanings and regularly scheduled exams every six months. Visits may be scheduled more frequently as needed for those with specialized treatment needs.

At-Home Dental Hygiene
Having regular and daily brushing and flossing routines will help prevent cavities and gum disease throughout life’s stages.

Our team will guide you in all features of at-home dental hygiene, such as proper flossing and brushing techniques.

Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is an essential mineral that strengthens teeth against plaque and bacteria. It is often naturally found in water and foods. Depending on your treatment plan, it may include fluoride application during your appointment.

For your dental health we may decide to use fluoride because it effectively defends teeth against acid attacks from plaque, restore teeth, and stops cavities from developing.

Tooth Sealants
Food particles and plaque collect between your teeth often cannot be reached by regular flossing and brushing. Sealants can be applied to effectively seal the deep grooves, which protects the tooth enamel from plaque and resulting decay.

Our dentist can provide this simple treatment in one visit, in which a tooth-colored acrylic “coating” is painted to the surface of the tooth. Usually, sealants take only a few minutes to apply and cause no pain. The sealants can last for an extended period of time before further procedure is needed.

Periodontal Disease & Scaling and Root Planing
When the gums and bone around teeth starts to get infected, this is known as periodontal disease (gum disease). The bacteria found in plaque can cause irritation on the gums, making the gum tissue become red and swollen, also causing it to bleed easily. If the continuation of periodontal disease remains untreated, the gums will start to detach from the teeth, causing “pockets” to develop between the teeth and the gums along the gumline. This can lead to decaying of gum tissue, jawbone, and future tooth loss.

Scaling and root planing is another treatment course to help stop periodontal disease. This is dome by reaching in between the gums and teeth down to the roots. Scaling and root planing helps the gums close painful pockets that have possibly formed around the teeth. This procedure allows All Smiles and a registered dental hygienist to provide a deeper cleaning between the compromised gums and teeth, preventing future periodontal disease.

Mouth Guards
Bruxism is also known for teeth grinding, which is another dental concern. Symptoms can include sensitive teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and ear or neck aches. Some long term and painful effects, can be caused such as broken, chipped or cracked teeth.

Teeth grinding can happen during sleep so if there are any concerns, All Smiles can help you figure out whether or not a medical condition may be contributing to this habit.

If diagnosed with teeth grinding, our dentists can assist in providing a custom fitted nightguard for your teeth with a simple impression of your bottom and top teeth. We will take special care to ensure that your nightguard is made to your unique mouth and fits perfectly for maximum protection against teeth grinding.
